FG Partners UN On Peace, Security
The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, yesterday said his ministry had entered into partnership with the United Nations on peace and de-radicalisation of youths.
Maku made this known in a memorandum he presented at a technical session of the 44th National Council on Information holding in Osogbo.
Our correspondent reports that the Director in charge of Public Communication in the ministry, Mr Emmanuel Agbegir, presented the memorandum on behalf of the minister.
Maku said the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) would soon commence implementation of the project through inter-cultural dialogue and education.
“UNESCO, through its Country Office in Nigeria, has decided to embark on this project to preach peace as well as minimise conflict and youth radicalisation.
“The project hopes to use culturally sensitive approaches to conflict prevention and driving peace messages through town hall meetings in the relevant zones.
“The project will encourage the promotion of cultural industries, production of manuals and organisation of sensitisation workshops to promote a culture of peace.
“It is with a view to promoting harmonised co-existence between the various ethno-religious communities in the country,’’ Maku said.
The minister also said that there was need to embark on “intentional peace promotion’’ through the media and public enlightenment campaigns.
“Council is hereby informed that the Federal Ministry of Information will collaborate with UNESCO to carry out these public enlightenment campaigns,’’ Maku added.
He solicited the cooperation of radio and television stations and other media of mass communication in publicising the peace messages when developed.
