Consultant Wants Govt To Check Noise Pollution
An environmental pollu
tion consultant, Mr. Ayo Balogun, has called on relevant government authorities to do more to enforce noise pollution regulations to save urban residents from unnecessary health complications.
He said that noise pollution had made life unbearable as urban residents could develop serious health challenges after a prolonged exposure to noise pollution.
Balogun who made this known to journalists in Lagos said that it was sad to note that little research or documentation existed on the nature and extent of noise pollution activities, inspite of the extensive generation of noise in the urban area of Nigeria.
“There is no research or documentation available on its impact and the implications for urban communities and their residents. It has been observed, however, that these regulations have failed to curb noise pollution, due to the lack of enforcement”, he said.
Balogun however noted that urban noise was getting increasingly more pervasive, prompting public comments and few noise abatement regulations.
He listed the various sources of noise pollution in the Lagos area as road traffic, industrial, entertainment and religious activities as well as riots and advertisements, all of which he said had effects on the residents.
“Disturbance of sleep and interference with communication and productivity are just some of the minor effects noise pollution has on urban residents”, he added.
The consultant also noted that noise pollution had also been associated with serious health complications such as hearing loss, cardiovascular problems and some gastric upsets, which he said the hazards of noise had made it imperative that residents minimise some of these problems.
