In line with its efforts to empower the youths, Ihietutu Community in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has donated 21 motorcycles to 21 youths in the community.
The Chairman of Ihietutu Community Development Union, Mr Paulinus Okoro, who presented the motorcycles to the beneficiaries last Saturday, said it was part of its human development programme.
Okoro said the gesture was aimed at empowering youths economically to enable them to contribute meaningfully to the social and economic development of the community.
He said that economic empowerment of the youth was critical in human development of any society, adding that the youth empowerment programme was part of a series of programmes lined up by the union under its human development initiative.
“Our human development initiative is an aspect of the administration’s community social responsibility programme. More youths would be considered in our next phase of the programme by middle of 2014,’’ he said.
The community leader noted that criminal activities and other anti-social acts associated with the youth would reduce if they were meaningfully engaged and appealed to youths to respect constituted authorities and shun all forms of indecent behaviour.
“We have programmes that would impact positively on the lives of every member of the community. I appeal to my people, especially the youth, to respect constituted authorities and support the leadership to succeed in its programmes,’’ he said.
Some prominent indigenes of the community, who spoke during the occasion, lauded the chairman for embarking on the youth development programme.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Chidi Okoro, a graduate of philosophy, thanked the leadership of the community for the youth empowerment initiative.
Okoro promised that they would make optimal use of the motorcycles to enhance their economic profile.
“What the community has done is unprecedented and we appreciate the leadership. We promise to make good use of the gift,’’ he said.
