Clerics Hail Phase Out Of Pail-Latrine System
Putting an end to the pail-latrine system remains one of the major changes in the urban renewal policy of successive administrations in Rivers State.
The President of Eastern Niger Delta Advanced Theological Seminary and New Destiny Fellowship of Churches International, Professor Fynface Aaron, who made the declaration, said the stoppage of the pail toilet system had improved the hygienic condition of Port Harcourt City.
Prof Aaron who was speaking on the background of the centenary anniversary of Port Harcourt City, said the pail toilet system which was in vogue in the city in the past was an indecent method which polluted the environment.
According to him, stoppage of the pail system which was a legacy of elder statesman, Rev (Dr) Sokari Soberekon metamorphosed into the water system.
The clergyman said that, Rev (Dr) Sokari Soberekon who was the chairman, Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and Chairman, Port Harcourt City Council 33 years ago was responsible for the introduction of the water system into the city, noting that the system which had been working since then had made Port Harcourt cleaner.
Also speaking, Rev (Dr) Sokari Soberekon said that the stoppage was the effect of a bye-law passed by the council in 1980 as a result of the environmental hazards unhealthy practice posed to the city.
Soberekon also said that the council at that time also outlined other measures such as: one way traffic streets and roads to ease traffic congestion in the city.
He further said that property development idea in the Diobu, GRA, Phase II was enunciated at that time to ensure even development of the city.
