‘Women’s Political Role, Complimentary’
The Deputy Chairman of Port Harcourt City Council, Mrs Nancy Stephen has declared that women are not in politics to compete with the men, but to compliment the efforts of men in developing democracy in Nigeria.
Ms Stephn who also is the Vice Chairperson of Elected Women Forum, Rivers State stated this on Satruday during a live radio programme in Port Harcourt, “View Point”, she said the forum had been in forefront of the campaign against violence and thurggery in politics, advising women not to be allowed to be used as tools to forment trouble in the society.
According to her, “Women are usually used as tools to be carrying placards during protests on the streets. We want to stop this.”
The Deputy Mayor disclosed that the forum would soon embark on a door-to-door campaign to educate women on the need to shun violence and not to be used as tools for violence.
She noted that Rivers State registered the lowest violence in the 2011 general elections due largely to the efforts of the state government in checking violence and thuggery.
We shall not relent in our effort to educate women on how to work for change and develop Rivers State. We are elected to effect change and that we shall do,” she declared.
Stephen said the elected women officers do not think negatively, but on how to improve and develop the state and the nation at large, adding that they will continue to seek peace and unity among the people.
