Strike: Medical Centre Engages Part-Time Nurses
The Federal Medical
Centre in Umuahia has engaged temporary nurses to assist the doctors in its emergency unit following the strike by para-medics and other staff members.The hospital engaged six nurses last Friday to assist in the treatment of in-patients the resolution of issues leading to the strike.
A doctor at the centre said on condition of anonymity that the measure was to cushion the impact of the strike. He said the nurses were engaged due the quantum of work in section, adding that they would be relieved once the strive was over. Meanwhile, reactions have trailed the ongoing strike by the workers. Mr Amarachi Ogbonna, a pharmacist, said that the strike had put the health of people at the risk of developing life threatening complications.
Ogbonna said it was important for the federal government to address the issues that led to the strike to avert loss of lives.
Mrs Ngozi Kalu, whose husband is on admission, said she could not obtain the result of laboratory tests carried out on her husband due to the absence of the attendants.
The leaders of the various staff unions had earlier barricaded the entrance to the hospital to deny their members entry.
