The Country Chairman, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mr Mutiu Sunmonu, yesterday said that the company paid royalties and taxes amounting to $69 billion (N10. 35 trillion) to Nigeria from 2008 to 2011.
Sunmonu, also the Managing Director of all Shell subsidiaries in Nigeria, said this in Lagos at the launch of Shell’s newest advertising and campaign slogan tagged: “Let’s Go’’.
The managing director said that Shell contributed $178 million (N26.7 billion) to the Niger Delta Development Commission as the ‘mandate’ of the subsidiaries.
He said that the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and the Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd. (SNEPCo) directly invested additional $103 million (N15.45 billion) in the Niger Delta.
“Shell’s investments in the Niger Delta are toward addressing her socio-economic and development challenges,“ he said.
Sunmonu added that SPDC and SNEPCo paid about $635 million (N95.25 billion) into the Federal Government’s Education Trust Fund in the last five years.
He also said that Shell companies awarded $2.4 billion (N3.6 trillion) contracts to indigenous contractors in 2012, representing 64 per cent of the total cost of contracts it awarded from 2008 to 2011.
Menawhile, the Managing Director of all associated companies of Shell in Nigeria, Mr Mutiu Sunmonu,  said yesterday that oil spillages recorded by Shell companies in the country reduced by 173 occurrences in 2012.
He told newsmen in Lagos that Shell’s activities, especially about crude oil spillages in 2012, were better when compared with the number in 2011.
He told newsmen that a total number of 351 sites were “cleaned up,“ while the oil conglomerate recorded about 15 sabotage and theft incidents in 2012.
Sunmonu said any new campaign slogan of the oil conglomerate was aimed at emphasising the importance of a better future for Nigeria and her people.
“This ‘Let’s Go‘ campaign is the first Shell advertising of its type in Nigeria.
“Since our Corporate Identity Campaign about a decade and a half ago, we now pursue social goals that emphasise themes like being country-specific and campaigns about being Nigerian-content compliant,’’ he said.
Sunmonu added that Shell ventures in Nigeria produced an average of 949,000 barrels of crude oil per day in 2012.
