Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon Fred Igwe has said that the State is prepared to host “Rivers Sports Festival,” in October this year.

The festival would be in preparation for the 19

th National Sports Festival billed to hold in Calabar, Cross River States, next year.

He said the Sports Festival would be contested among the 23 local government areas in the State, noting that it is another avenue to discover hidden talents from the rural areas.

Hon Igwe made the disclosures at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex, Saturday, shortly after he inspected some sports facilities in the State.

According to him, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex would be completed and commissioned in December this year.

“As I speak, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex is 90 per cent completed because all the materials have already been ordered, but yet to arrive, as soon as they arrive, it would be just to fix them, which would not take up to two months. We will use this place in December, we are very sure of that.” Hon Igwe said.

The state sports boss explained that the reason to site the sports complex at Igwuruta is that Port Harcourt township has become small, so there is the need for expansion.

“You will agree with me that Port Harcourt town ship has become too small, we need expansion, but very soon this place will develop, because at the back of the sports complex there is a university under construction and the Greater Port Harcourt has started buildings,” he stated.

Hon Igwe visited the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex, No 1 Field, Basketball, Tennis and Volleyball Courts, all in Old Port Harcourt township.
