Rivers Weightlifting Association Discovers New Talents
The Rivers State Weight lifting Association has discovered two talents at the just concluded weightlifting competition tagged “National Youth, Junior and Senior Championships”, held in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State.
The tournament which ended yesterday was aimed at discovering new talents for camping ahead of the African, World and Commonhealth competitions scheduled to hold later this year.
According to Chief Coach of the association Ojadi Aduche, the aim of the competition was achieved as two female lifters who are potential laurels were discovered during the championship for the state.
He stated that Peace Monday and Chikordi Nnamani were the products of the just concluded tournament, saying that, both athletes won six gold medals in their various categories for the state.
Monday and Nnamani both 13 years of age competed in the youth category of the championship and won three gold medals each in the 53kg and 63kg, respectively.
He explained that the new talents would be groomed and prepared ahead of the first Youth Sports Festival coming up from the 19
th of September 2013, in Abuja and subsequent youth competitions.
Coach Aduche noted that athletes of 17 years and below, would be selected for grooming from 19 different Sports Federations such as wrestling, boxing, athletics, weightlifting, swimming, judo, taekwondo and others would participate in the competition which is expected to hold yearly.
