Residents Carpet NDDC Over Ihunwo Chinwo Street
They carried several plac ards, some of which read; ‘Amaechi Save Our Soul,’ ‘NDDC should investigate Provomek,; ‘Provomek has made our road worse, ‘Provomek is total failure’ and ‘my Daddy’s car cannot move again due to bad road.’
Some of the protesters told newsmen that the NDDC has been inundated with several petitions from the Association and its Attorneys on the abandonment of the road project to no avail, hence their protest.
The association’s Chairman, Mr. Emeka Awanye and Secretary, Mr. Cyril Bakwuye, in a joint statement shortly after the protest, hinted that the company only shabbily constructed a drainage in 2010 and abandoned the project since then.
Lamenting how the dilapidated state of the road had caused untold hardship to residents and users of Ihunwo Chinwo Street, Woji and how vehicles break down daily, while children area always in danger especially at night, they said residents have managed to access the road through self- help efforts.
They noted that several other road projects awarded by the NDDC within the neighborhood were completed within few months by other contractors, adding that efforts by officials of the Ihunwo Chinwo Landlords/Residents Association to reach the contractor and the NDDC to re-mobilise to site have failed. The sad state of affairs they said, has caused many to suspect some fraudulent or shady deals between the contractor and NDDC officials, “more so as no NDDC official has ever visited the project site for any inspection, as it is customary with NDDC on road projects.”
Neither the contractor handling the project nor the NDDC Acting Managing Director, Dr. Atako could be reached as at press time, but an official of the commission volunteered that such matters can only be revisited when a new board is constituted.
