‘Grassroots Sports, Key To Growth’
The Anambra State Commissioner for Youth and Sports. Okey Aroh, says there is a need to get back to the grassroots to sustain the growth of sports in the country.
Aroh made the suggestion last Wednesday when he led senior officials of the state’s ministry of Youth and Sports on tour of local government areas.
He said the tour was part of preparations for the Seventh Anambra Sports Festival slated for September 11 to September 15.
The commissioner said the local government system would need to pay serious attention to sporting activities as they were the basic foundation on which to begin.
“We cannot ignore the local government system in the development of grassroots sports in the country which is why we are involving them in Anambra so that they can mobilize the communities.
“They are the closest to the primary and secondary schools and so the councils must complement the efforts of the federal and state governments to develop young talents.
“Facilities are going to be built in the council areas so that the youths can access to them early and use them as venues for our sports festivals in subsequent editions”, he said.
