The Abia State Government has said that it spent more than N1 billion in two years to reconstruct and rehabilitate dilapidated roads in Aba, the commercial hub of the state.

The Special Adviser on Works to the Governor, Mr Jude Nwokoro, announced this in an interview in Umuahia on Tuesday, said Gov. Theodore Orji in the last two years reconstructed and rehabilitated Brass, Fulks, Abayi, Umuochama, Ukwu Mango, as well as A-Line in the Ariaria Market and Old Express.

He said that other roads rehabilitated include Azikwe, Eziukwu, Okigwe, Nwala, and some parts of Ngwa Road, others are Udeagbara Road, Abia Teaching Hospital, Aba Road, Ngwa Road by Opobo Junction as well as Port Harcourt Road through East Street as ongoing road projects.

He attributed the deplorable state of Ngwa Road to indiscriminate dumping of refuse by some residents.

“Work slowed down presently because of the rains, but a big challenge we are facing on Ngwa Road is the menace of refuse dumped on the road by the people. “Recently, four persons were caught in the act of dumping refuse on Ngwa Road and the people are now undergoing interrogation with security agents. “Residents are warned to desist from dumping refuse on roads, especially the ones under construction because such act compounds issues for government and the construction firms,’’ he said.

Nwokoro condemned the attitude of some persons for not appreciating government’s effort over the condition of roads in Aba, adding: ?”Aba is not the only town in Abia’’.

Special Adviser to Abia Government on Project Monitoring, Chief Pat Mgbemena, noted that the government was committed to ensuring that Aba received a facelift through quality road delivery and other infrastructure.

He said that apart from road infrastructure, the government had made great strides in other sectors, including the judiciary, education and health.

“Last month, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, inaugurated dialysis facilities at the Abia Specialist Hospitals in Umuahia and Aba. “Government is equally constructing a Workers’ Secretariat, the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, the Umuahia Industrial Market and many other projects,’’ he said.
