The Enugu?State Government has said that it is committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on?MDGs, Mr?Okezie?Nwanjoku, made the declaration in?Enugu at a town-hall meeting as part of the nationwide advocacy and sensitisation visit of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on?MDGs, Dr Precious?Gbeneol.

Nwanjoku said the state government had provided free maternal health care to reduce maternal and child mortality in the state.

“The Enugu?State Government is quite committed to achieving the?MDGs. The blueprint of the governor is in tandem with the eight Millennium Development Goals adopted by the UN.We are at the verge of accomplishing all the four-point development agenda before the terminal date of this administration incidentally is in 2015,’’?he said.

Some stakeholders who spoke during the meeting lamented the lack of awareness of the?MDGs projects in the state.

Mrs Florence?Aneke, a member of the civil society, said the people were not aware of?MDGs projects in the state.

?”People do not know about these programmes, whether they are?MDGs or not. Many of them usually think it is the state government that is doing the project. There should be more sensitisation to make people aware of these programmes,’’ she said.

Another civil society member, Mr?Emeka?Amalu, called on the government to pay more attention to the area of education and poverty eradication in the rural areas.

Responding,?Gbeneol?said the?MDGs programmes were aimed at delivering high impact on the vulnerable poor in the society.

She said the team would continue to monitor the implementation of the projects as a way of pushing for the attainment of the goals.

The?SSA?commissioned the?Uwani Enugu?Cottage Hospital built with the?MDGs fund.
