The newly elected leadership of the  Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) familarisation visit to the state chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Tuesday was marred by disagreement by both parties over the position of TUC Secretaryship.

The ASCSN new leadership were elected last month July with Comrade Pastor Austin Jonah being elected state chairman of the union.

Comrade Pastor Austin Jonah took over from the former chairman of the union, Comrade Okere Jonas Ogundu, who was elected the state secretary of the TUC during the last delegates conference of the union held at Presidential Hotel Port Harcourt.

Comrade Pastor Austin Jonah and his executive have told the TUC state chairman Comrade Chika Onuegbu that by virtue of the fact that Comrade Okere Jonas Ogundu was no more the state chairman of the union he can no longer be the TUC state secretary.

Comrade Pastor  Austin said the former chairman of the union was elected TUC secretary by virtue of the position he held in the union.

He stressed that since Comrade Okere Jonas Ogundu has relinquished his state chairmanship position of the union, the new chairman of the union being himself should takeover the TUC state secretary position.

This fact was supported by the new executive of the union.

Responding, the TUC state chairman, Comrade Chika Onuegbu, disagreed with the union position insisting that there have been precedent of similar situation in the congress where the congress agreed that such officer must serve out his tenure having been elected.

Meanwhile, Comrade Onuegbu has promised to assist the new leadership of the state chapter of  the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria in the interest of the welfare of the union members.

The TUC boss said the greatest achievements were keeping to his promise of building institutions within the union.

He said the institutions have enhanced the core values and ideologies in the various unions, adding that the core values have added value to the union members in various areas.

Comrade Onuegbu further added that these values guide the operations of the union and its elected representatives.

He said his challenge is to hand over to a credible good leadership that will keep the union struggle and temple of good leadership intact.

The labour leader said that it remains painful for a succeeding union leaders to derail off track from a common struggle to protect the welfare of the union members.

He used the occasion to congratulate the new exco of the senior civil servants in the state.

He challenged them to concentrate on issues that will promote welfare of their union members rather than mundane thing.

Earlier, Comrade Pastor Austin Jonah has commended the TUC’s boss for his sterling  leadership qualities.

He said ASCSN will cooperate with TUC to promote welfare of the workers, stressing that the union will not disappoint the workers of the state.

Comrade Pastor Jonah called for proper information dissemination to labour leaders in the state by the leadership of the TUC and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
