Committee, Varsity Collaborate On Flood Management

The Bayelsa Post Flood Management Committee in collaboration with the Flood Research Group of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, will hold a workshop on August 27 to address flooding in the state.
The collaboration followed a prediction of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency which listed Bayelsa as one of the states that might experience flooding during the year.
The Chairman of the Bayelsa State Post Flood Management Committee, Chief Francis Doukpola, told newsmen in Yenagoa  that the workshop was necessary to help educate the people on important steps to take during flooding.
He said it would provide a platform for learning best practices in flood management and technology and assist to draw up an action plan of collaboration between the state and federal governments as well as the private sector.
He said community dwellers were bound to be better off in terms of knowledge after the workshop.
“It will take inventory and review the interventions and shortfalls experienced during the 2012 flooding. The one-day interactive session will specifically look at flood control measures, causes of flooding in Bayelsa; flood mitigation, monitoring and evaluation.
“We will critically look at the enhancement of institutional measure through capacity building of ecological agencies and other aspect of flood management.
“The workshop will also showcase further intervention efforts planned by the state Post Flood Management Committee,“ he said.
He said the sub-theme of the workshop would be: Flood Management: A Collective Responsibility.
