The former South-West Secretary, Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Mr Adekunle Adenuga, has urged the Federal Government to take stiffer action against the smuggling of poultry products, to encourage local farmers.
Adenuga said in an interview in Lagos that increasing import duty on the products would also encourage local patronage.
He noted that encouraging locally produced goods would boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“If imported poultry products are not available in the market, consumers would have no choice than turn to local poultry products.
“This will increase the production level of agricultural products, which would also boost the country’s economy.’’
The former secretary advised the Federal Government to persuade banks to reduce interest rate on loans given to poultry farmers.
“This will enable farmers to get funds for their businesses.’’
He added that government should put in place a price control system whereby farmers could get subsidised poultry feeds.
“High cost of feeds is a big challenge most poultry farmers encounter,’’
Adenuga added that increased production of poultry produce would boost food security for the citizens of the country.
