The Anambra State Government has announced the introduction of a micro-credit financing scheme for people with disability in the state.
Gov. Peter Obi announced the scheme in Awka last Saturday while inaugurating the 2013 Medical Mission of the Anambra State Association (ASA), mainly constituting indigenes who lived or are living in the U.S.
Obi said the scheme was part of the state government’s economic empowerment programme for physically challenged persons, who had acquired self-sustaining skills.
In his remarks, the President of the association, Prof. Allison Anadi, said the group had made its medical mission known in 72 towns in the state since its inception seven years ago.
He said more than 72,000 patients who suffered various ailments had benefited from the medical mission’s free services.
Anadi said the association was focusing on six projects, namely: medical mission, micro-credit for women, research and documentation, special programme for the elderly and disabled persons, human rights and education.
In his speech, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Lawrence Ikeako, commended the association for embarking on the medical mission.
Speaking on behalf of the physically challenged persons, Mr Lawrence Nwanolue, thanked the governor and the ASA-U.S.A for the efforts to uplift their standard of lives and for giving them a sense of belonging.
Nwanolue requested for more interventions, especially more employment opportunities for members.
