Amaechi Urges Youths To Shun Violence

Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi has advised youths in the State to shun violence and be law-abiding in order to  benefit from the numerous programmes put in place for them by government.

Governor Amaechi gave the advice, Monday at the 2013 International Youth Day celebration tagged: “Youth Migration; Moving Development Forward,” in Port Harcourt.

Amaechi who was represented by the Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Fred Igwe stressed the role of youths in the development of the State and the country, noting that government had decided to partner with the youths to enable them enjoy the dividend of democracy.

According to him, government has put together some youth-friendly policies and projects and urged youths to be part of the peace and security initiatives of the present administration in the State.

In his speech, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Sir Owene Wonodi said the ministry would ensure that all programmes targeted at the youth were implemented.

The commissioner requested all companies including multinationals and other stakeholders to assist the government in its efforts at developing the youths to ameliorate their living standard, pointing out that government alone could not handle the issue of youth development.

He also lauded the Governor for providing an enabling environment for peace and also thanked local governments and corporate bodies for their assistance in training of youth.

Earlier, the State chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Comrade Kingsley Ibanichuka, said that a youth institute if established will  help to build capacity and develop the youth of Rivers State.
