Ake Group Replies Amaechi’s Critics
The Chief Godspower Ake-led faction of the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described as myopic the latest tantrums by the Felix Obuah-led group over taking over of the criminal prosecution in the trial of Leader of the state House of Assembly, Hon Chidi Lloyd, by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Wogu Boms.
The Ake-led group, reacting through its state Publicity Secretary, George Ukwuoma-Nwogba, stated that the Obuah state Executive could raise an eye-brow over proper, legal and judicial procedures adopted and recognised by a court of competent jurisdiction and Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), gives much insight into the degree of lawlessness the group wants to establish in Rivers State.
It dismissed as baseless claims of bias levelled against the State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Hon. Boms whose sole ‘sin according to the statement was to defend the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers a state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to assume authority over a criminal proceeding in his state.
The Ake group further expressed shock at Obuah’s seeming claim of being more knowledgeable in Law and Jurisprudence than the Honourable Justice of the High Court and Nigeria’s most senior lawyers, including the lead counsel on the side of the Nigeria Police.
“Our position on this,” Ukwuoma-Nwogba maintained, “is that those learned counsels deserve not such disparagement and slight. Rivers people were unaware that Obuah had turned into a legal czar as to cast aspersion on the Bench and Bar, forgetting how he came in as factional chairman of PDP when the whole world knows the truth.
“On the call for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to investigate the Amaechi-led administration, state House of Assembly, Honourable lawmakers and wife of the Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi, we make bold to state that this is not the first time neither the last that such calls would come from Obuah’s men.
“But our worry is that the EFCC has once more shown that it could turn into a tool for political witch-hunt of perceived political enemies. We sincerely wished it was not so. However, the facts before us speak to the contrary,” the Ake-led group said, adding the Amaechi administration remains the only government in the history of Rivers State which had initiated projects in every nook and cranny of Rivers State as acknowledged by all, including international, national and local stakeholders have scored very high.
“Governor Amaechi has nothing to hide as long as it is in the domain of the fiscal responsibility of the administration he has run since 2007. The state’s financial books are clean and open for scrutiny any time either by the EFCC or any other agency, local or international,” the Ake group stated.
