The Nigerian Agricultural
Insurance Corporation (NAIC) says it has paid over N10 million claims to farmers affected by the 2012 flood in Enugu.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, Dr Tijjani Garba, made this known in Enugu last Tuesday during a courtesy visit to Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu State.
Garba said that the beneficiaries were those who had subscribed to the corporation’s insurance scheme.
The NAIC boss urged the state government to pay off its outstanding insurance subsidy of over N7 million, to enable the corporation function effectively and allow farmers to benefit.
Garba said the subsidy owed was for the period of 2010 to 2012, adding that timely payment would enable the corporation pay off claims of other farmers affected by the flood.
“We want the state government to be paying this insurance subsidy regularly, so that we can now be in a better position to assist farmers in the state.
“The scheme is subsidised to the tune of 50 per cent by the Federal and state governments in the proportion of 37.5 per cent and 12.5 per cent respectively.
“The outstanding premium due from the Enugu Government is more than N7.1 million for the period of 2010 to 2012.”
Responding Chime thanked the corporation for assisting farmers in the state.
Chime, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Amechi Okolo, gave an assurance that the administration would do everything possible to promote agricultural transformation in the state.
