No fewer than 106 houses were destroyed by natural disaster in Osun State between January and July 2013.
The Osun State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) General Manager, Mr. Tunde Oyesiji who disclosed this to journalists in an interview in Osogbo stated that the breakdown of the figure indicated that 19 houses were affected in Osogbo in February by rainstorm with heavy wind.
He said “In Ilesha and its environs, 14 properties were recorded to have been affected by rainstorm, including residential and commercial buildings in March”.
Oyesiji also said three persons died when a bungalow was razed down by fire in Kajola in July, pointing out that the figures were based on cases reported to the State Emergency management Agency.
“Some of these disasters have been effectively managed and prevented. The government has proven to be responsible and responsive by putting measures in place to prevent and manage disaster in Osun”, he added.
Measures put in place, he said included removal of illegal structures on Water Channels and drains, dredging of water ways and procurement of 50 ambulances for emergency response.
He said other measures were the inauguration of 2.5 million tree seedlings for planting, organised refuse collection and the release of functional emergency telephone lines of the fire service stations to the public.
“Considering the Socio-economic Losses of natural disasters, no amount is too much to spend on disaster management and clean environment”, the SEMA General Manager added.
