WAAPP, Ministry Sign MoU

The West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme-Nigeria (WAAPP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Environment to enable effective use of pesticides in the country.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Communication Officer of WAAPP, Mr Matthew Haruna, in Abuja  and made available to The Tide.
According to the statement, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is also a part of the MoU.
The statement said, Prof Damian Chikwendu, National Project Coordinator of WAAPP, had stressed that the MoU would ensure the implementation of pesticides registration, regulation and use in the country.
Chikwendu pointed out that the MoU would also help in the realisation of the domestication and implementation of ECOWAS regulations and policies on pesticides.
The statement stated that the MoU was signed by Chikwendu, Mrs Olufunke Babade and Mrs Soyombo representing WAAPP-Nigeria, the Ministry of Environment and NESREA respectively.
However WAAPP is a World Bank initiative that was formulated by ECOWAS with the objective to generate and disseminate improved technologies in selected African countries.
The project currently has 13 participating ECOWAS states; Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivore, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Benin, Togo, Niger, and Guinea.
