RVHA Crisis: Judicial Commission Begins Work …Urges RSG To Implement Eventual Report
The Justice Biobele Georgewill-led eight-man judicial commission of inquiry into the crisis that rocked Rivers State House of Assembly between 9th and 10th July has commenced work, The Tide has learnt.
Barely one week after Governor Chibuike Amaechi inaugurated the panel through his Deputy, Engr Tele Ikuru, The Tide reliably gathered that already, plans are a foot to summon parties involved in the crisis to appear before it.
Though it is not certain whether the panel will sit in camera or in public, The Tide learnt that the body may have adopted a strategy to meet with parties in closed door sessions.
It would be recalled that Justice Georgewill, who is notable for overseeing so many panel of inquiries in the state, including the B-Dere-K-Dere crisis in 2008, has promised that the panel will carry out its duties without fear.
Shortly after being inaugurated last Monday, Justice Georgewill assured they will carry out their duties with integrity and without bias.
He assured that apart from investigating the crisis, the panel will ensure that the state has peace, while expressing the hope that government will implement the report to move the state forward.
“We will not fail Rivers State, we will not fail Rivers people, we will do justice to all that appear before us’, he said.
The panel, has been defended by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Wogu Boms who clarified that it was not a parallel legislative body but established in accordance with laws cap 30 of the laws of Rivers State.
The law empowers the governor to investigate into any matter that may have caused or breached the peace of the state, Boms stated.
During the inauguration, Governor Amaechi mandated the panel to ascertain immediate and remote causes of the crisis, ascertain properties, number of persons injured and whether other factors within or outside were responsible.
The panel is to conclude and submit its report before or on 15th of October, 2013 to the state government for study.
