The Rivers State Government has been called upon to rehabilitate the Nembe, Bonny, Bille Jetties.
The Chairman, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Rivers State, Comrade Jonah Jumbo, made the call during an interview with The Tide correspondent in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Comrade Jumbo said the jetty, which was once a of activities has now become a death trap and an eye-sore as passengers travelling to these riverine communities in the state face an uphill task of boarding or alerting from boats at the jetty.
He said most of these communities are oil producing areas with companies of international repute where maritime business also booms, adding that construction of a new befitting concrete landing jetty would give the people a sigh of relief and alleviate the untold difficulties they faced, stressing that as law abiding and tax paying citizens, such provision would give them a sense of belonging, as their plight is pathetic.
The MWUN Chairman also appealed to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to also help empower the speed boat drivers with speed boats and engine, as they provided NDDC mass transit bus scheme for land transporters, pointing out that, the long neglect by the government and indeed NDDC is alarming and unfair.
Comrade Jumbo also appealed to the government to float or construct a mega filling station on the water-ways to Bonny and other revering communities to assist boat drivers purchase the product with ease for their operations, because they face difficulties in purchasing fuel in Port Harcourt.
According to him,  the provision of gun boats to safeguard the mega filling station within the water ways would no doubt  checkmate the activities of criminals on the water ways as well as give the drivers a sense of belonging.
