Redeploy Rivers CP Now -Abe
L-R: President, Rotary International, 2014-2015, Mr Gary Huang; his wife, Corinna, and Senate President, David Mark, during the Rotary President’s visit to the Senate President in Abuja on Monday
The Senator representing Rivers South-East in the National Assembly, Magnus Ngei Abe has called for the immediate redeployment of the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu, saying that his further stay in the state is a threat to peace
Speaking to reporters in Port Harcourt, Senator Abe said since Mbu’s posting in the state, crime rate has gone up.
He expressed the hope that the Inspector- General of Police would heed to the cry of Rivers people and redeploy the police commissioner,” I think it’s actually an embarrassment to the police for them to wait this long for the National Assembly. It is clear if you look at the Senate Committee report, it is clear that crime has gone up in Port Harcourt since this man has been here. It is clear that normal policing is not going on in the state. It is clear that the citizens of the state are at risk’’.
Abe also sued for peace as he blamed deep-rooted grievance amongst politicians in the state as responsible for recent crisis that engulfed the state.
He said that he has always been on the side of peace in order to resolve the matter amicably saying,” I think that the present development gives everybody a clear field in which we can actually work together to view our differences because there are differences that have created the situation and we need to sincerely address those differences and try to look for a common ground’’.
Abe said the take over of the Rivers State House of Assembly is by both chambers and not only by the House of Reps, citing section 11(4) of the constitution which empowers the two chambers to take over any assembly in such circumstance.
He explained that for now all powers of the House of Assembly is now vested in the National Assembly, as he dismissed views that the development would lead to legislative interregnum in the state.
“ What the situation simply means is that all legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly except the power of impeachment is now moved to Abuja; which is now vested in the National Assembly. So if you want to do anything that the Rivers State House of Assembly is entitled by law to do, you have to approach the National Assembly’’ Abe added.
