Police May Investigate 146 Goals Scandal -NFF
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has threatened to involve the police in the investigation of the two matches that produced a scandalous 146 goals, as the Disciplinary and Organising Committee awaits the report of the match commissioners.
The Chairman of the NFF media and publicity committee, Emeka Inyama, while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday, described the incident as a national embarrassment. He further stated that all persons found to be involved in the quagmire will be punished.
“It is a shame, it is annoying, it is criminal, it is a scandal, it is ridiculous. It has dealt Nigeria and Nigerian football a devastating blow. And we are going to punish those found to have a hand in this ugly, embarrassing incident… We’re still investigating. Maybe, the Police might be brought in.” Inyama threatened.
A member of the NFF Disciplinary and Organising Committee, Mike Umeh also expressed his disappointment at the results. He however told Vanguard newspaper that his committee is awaiting report of the match commissioners involved as they cannot act arbitrarily.
“We are yet to get the report but I can assure you that every individual involved in those matches; the referees, match commissioners, club officials, players, even the state FA officials and everybody that had a role to play in the two games have some explaining to do”
“Although the four clubs and the results have been suspended, we are yet to take the final action as regards this case. The Amateur League has a board and not until they submit their report to the Disciplinary and Organising Committee, there is not much we can do.” Umeh said.
It will be recalled that two Amatuer League games involving Plateau United Feeders and Akurba FC on one hand, and Police Machine and Babayaro FC on the other hand produced an accumulated 146 goals, as Plateau Feeders and Police Machine won 79-0 and 67-0 respectively.
