Party Clears 302 Aspirants For Councillorship Polls
The Peoples’ Democratic
Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has cleared 302 aspirants to contest the councillorship elections for the Sept. 8 local government polls in the state while 88 aspirants that applied for the position were disqualified in the primaries held in each of the three senatorial zones of the state.
The state Chairman of the party, Prince Ugorji Amaoti told journalists in Abakaliki on Tuesday that some of them were disqualified for ineligibility, invalid tax payments and educational discrepancies.
Amaoti said that others withdrew from the race for various reasons while majority of the candidates emerged through consensus of the wards or community.
“This is democracy in action and the PDP believes in harmonisation and dialogue. Councillorship election is grass rooted and the strength of the PDP lies in the grassroots. “We do not impose candidates on people rather we allow them to choose who they want and that is the policy of the PDP,’’ he said.
The chairman said that the primaries were free and fair in the state. The primaries for the chairmanship candidates for the 13 councils were held in the party secretariat on Monday.
