The leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on the National Assembly to immediately commence the process of removing the administration of primary school teachers from the jurisdiction of the third tier of government.
The National President of the Union, Comrade Michael Olukoya stated this in Abuja at the Memorial Lecture in honour of the union founding National President, Late Reverend Israel Ransome-Kuti.
The union leader said the quest  to seek for such removal was necessitated by the quest to grant autonomy to the local government.
Comrade Olukoya said granting autonomy to local government administration with primary school system would destroy education at the foundation level.
He said the National Assembly should in the interest of protecting the primary schools in Nigeria relocate the administration of primary schools to the concurrent list under the state and federal governments.
The labour leader said premature retirement of primary school teachers at their prime age has done a great damage to the educational sector in the country, stressing that the retirement age of primary school teachers should be raised to 65 years as against the current 60  years or 35  years in service.
Comrade Olukoya said the union demands for a review of the retirement age of teachers to 65 years, no matter their length of service.
He said the quality of a professional teachers improves with age and experience, adding that as at now most teachers retire at their prime and no nation and educational system feel the impact seriously.
The labour leader said the union has make it abundantly clear that never again shall teachers of primary schools accept to come  under the administration of local government.
He said the union ??? that local government autonomy, if it must be stable and rewarding, should leave teachers out of the system.
Comrade Olukoya added that the union call on the National Assembly to save primary education from the siege of darkness and move it under the oversight of the federal and state government under the concurrent jurisdiction.
He decried the state of infrastructure in the education sector, urging the government to do something toward improving the infrastructure facilities in the nation’s education sector.
