NLC Kicks Against High Electricity Tariffs

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC has expressed concern over the increasing high electricity traffic following exorbitant review of electricity tariff by the Federal Government.
The congress in a statement issued by its president Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, pointed out that the multi year tariff structure as designed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and tacitly approved by government only project the interest of investors of the power sector.
He said no consideration was given to the consumers’ interest, most of whom are poor and incapable of paying the exorbitant tariff.
Comrade Omar said the new tariff was exploitative and saddening that the reviews are not accompanied by commensurate improved service in power supply.
He noted that electricity service delivery had plummeted over the years with consumers being compelled to pay exorbitant tariff rates for poor service. He said the organized labour called on the Federal Government to direct NERC to immediately review downward the entire multi-year tariff structure in the interest of the people.
The labour leader said a reform process which failed to carry along its people or protect their interest stands condemnable.
