The Federal Government has charged Nigerian Surveyors to come up with ideas that would help the country to overcome its challenges, particularly as it relates to the environment.

Giving the charge in Abuja at a forum of the International Federation of Surveyors with the theme: “Environment for Sustainability”, President Goodluck Jonathan stated that as land managers, surveyors have crucial role in tackling environmental challenges.

He recalled the incident of the 2012 flooding, and stressed that emerging environmental hazards should compel surveyors to brainstorm for lasting solutions to them.

The President said “considering the spate of flooding, we experienced in 2012 and the scourge of gully erosion in the south and desert encroachment in the north, I urge you to find lasting solutions to them”.

Jonathan commended surveyors for helping government in its transformation agenda to realize the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and Vision 20:2020 and maintained that surveying is indeed the bedrock of national physical development.

The Nigerian’s number one citizens who was represented by the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememem, said although Nigeria was an oil producing nation, it lacked technical and human capacity in hydrographic surveying inspite of its array of surveyors.

On his part, the president of the International Federationof Surveyors Mr Cheeai Teo underscored the importance of networking to make surveying meet the need of the people.

Teo also noted that surveying thrived on precision and urged members to uphold ethical values to achieve value for money.
