Following the recent
incident by protesters at the Port Harcourt International Airport, the Management of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has re-assured users of the various nation’s airports of their safety.
The spokesman of the authority,. Mr Yakubu Dati who stated this while speaking with newsmen, said although the incident did not affect flight operations condemned the attitude of the protesters for choosing to use the airport to embarass visitors to the state.
He explained that although the airport is a public place, the authorities of the airport would no longer allow any such gathering let alone embarass air passengers in any of the nation’s airport as security operatives have been put on alert to check such ugly development.
Dati said the stoning of some northern governors that were guests of the Rivers State government which caused damage to some vehicles in the convoy was unfortunate but lauded the quick intervention of airport security operatives to bring the situation under control.
The spokesman said security have been beefed up at the airports and reiterated that passengers safety are guaranteed for both local and foreign air travelers.
It would be recalled that on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, members of Grassroots Democratic Initiative (GDI), arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Port Harcourt carrying placards to protest the visit of some northern governors on solidarity to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi over the crisis rocking the state.
The leader of the group, Mr Bright Amaewhule said they got information that some northern governors and Prof Wole Soyinka were visiting the state and they mobilised themselves to prevent them from entering the state.
Although no life was lost in the process but some vehicles belonging to the Rivers State Government were destroyed, giving room for FAAN to reassured airport users of their safety.
Meanwhile, the incident has caused image problem to the state as the embarrassment to the northern governors would continue to count against the sponsors and the perpetrators of the regrettable incident.
