East-West Road Trading Worries Council Boss

The chairman of
Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Allen Nma, has called on traders from Elele Alimini and Rumuji markets to stay clear of the East West road on their market days.
Hon. Nma, who spoke to our correspondent last Monday, in a telephone interview said over time, the council has made efforts to relocate the traders without success.
“I have written to the council of chiefs to even provide me land for us to relocate them.
“That of Rumuji, we have also written to the council of chiefs and the Community Development Committee (CDC), to also provide land”, he said.
According to the council boss, the Police has in the past tried to prevent the traders from trading on the East West road to no avail.
While expressing worry to the danger trading along the road posses to the public and road users, Hon. Nma said he would be left with no option than to enforce the removal of the traders with the help of the Police.
“If this practice was left to continue, fatal accidents cannot be ruled out.
“I will work with the Police to start arresting them so that the public will know that the council was concerned about the ugly situation”, he said.
A driver who plys the East West road from Bayelsa to Port Harcourt, Mr. Tunde Oshimole, said on every market days, he made sure he diverts to avoid accidents as the traders did not care about vehicular movement on market days.
