Don Cautions On Dissolution Of Marriages
The Director Centre for Women, Gender and Development Studies (CWGDS), Dr Ihuoma Asiabaka, has called for caution in dissolution of marriages by judicial and traditional institutions.
Asiabaka, an Associate Professor in the School of Management, Federal University of Technology Owerri, who gave the advice in an interview on Saturday said that to dissolve a marriage was not the best way to approach marital problems, but to rise up to the challenges of marital problems. She said that couples must seek God’s intervention when faced with marital challenges and must apply every means of dialogue to tackle such problems. Asiabaka said that most divorces often led to crises that could destroy families, especially if children were involved, noting that issues were better handled inside marriages rather than outside.
She noted however that many Nigerians often did not follow the rules guiding divorces such as the payment of alimony after marriage dissolution and recommended “ a high degree of tolerance among the couples’’, to work out differences in marriage.
The director advocated for secondary school education as a minimum qualification a woman should attain before going into marriage.
According to her, secondary education will give a woman a certain level of exposure, which if well applied in marriage, would yield good result.
She advised parents to take on the responsibility of coaching their children on the art of building strong relationships before marriage and also giving them the proper training before aspiring to be husbands and wives. Asiabaka pledged that her
