Athletics Coach for the Deaf, Gad Onumaegbu, has promised to win medals for the country at the upcoming Deaflympic Games slated to hold in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The coach newsmen in Abuja that the team would strive to win as many medals as possible at the fiesta.
The Deaflympic Games will hold from July 25 to August 5 in the capital of the Eastern European country.
“It is just like any other Olympic Games; we want to go and accomplish something for the country and win as many medals as possible.
“So, we are going to make sure we give a good account of ourselves, against the world’s best,’’ he said.
Onumaegbu, who doubles as coach of Sprint and Hurdles, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), said he was drafted by the federation to head the deaf sports in their preparation for the Olympics.
“We have spent over ten days in camp training very hard and would be leaving for Bulgaria on July 20.
“This is about the 23rd Olympics for the Deaf. We were in the last edition in 2009 at Taipei, China, and that was our first outing.
“We came back with two silver medals in the 100 and 200 metres.
“So, we are poised to achieve greater success this year,’’ he said.
The 2013 edition of the Deaflympic Games has been expanded to include football and table-tennis.
