Check Draftmen Activities – Architect
Worried by series of re
ports on building collapse across the country which puts to question the integrity of professionals in the housing sector, an architect; Lenard Osei has called on government at various levels to check the activities of draft men.
Speaking to The Tide shortly after a seminar organised by Nigerian Institute of Architect (NIA), Rivers State Chapter, as part of activities marking the architect week in Port Harcourt last weekend, Lenard noted that architects are the originators of every building.
He said that most of the jobs that are supposed to be done by qualified architects are now been handled by draftsmen, noting that such a situation have not impacted well in the sector.
According to him, “There are quacks all over the housing sector, architects don’t canvass for jobs or publicise what they do. Collapse of building does not always come form architects,” and therefore, called on government to check the activities of draftsmen in the industry.
Mr Osei attributed the use of draftsmen to handle the job of architects to the quest by individuals or organizations to do a cheap and quick work which in actual fact does not follow laid down due process.
He disclosed that the Port Harcourt meeting was aimed at fashioning out practical ways of tackling the increasing incidents of building collapse and the issue of flooding that atre of concern to the body.
The NIA member explained that architects are working assiduously to evolve strategies that will guarantee maximum utlisation of land and ensure safety standards.
