A’Ibom Urges Groups On Rehabilitation Centre
The Akwa Ibom State Government has called on religious bodies and voluntary agencies to set up rehabilitation centres for drug addicts in the state.
The Commissioner for Health in Uyo, Mr Ememabasi Bassey said that government was ready to support any religious bodies and voluntary agencies willing to establish such centres.
“We as a government will support such an initiative; we need also to think about people who are already addicted, and we need to be rehabilitating them.
I want to use this medium to appeal to our religious and other voluntary agencies that, while we are actively tackling the problem of protection, we should also consider rehabilitation for addicts.’’ “A lot of addicts can actually come back to be very productive individuals and can serve as counsellors,” he emphasised
He said that the Ministry of Health would liaise with the NDLEA for enforcement of drugs laws, adding that the ministry would also sensitise the people to emerging drug problems in the state.
He called on youths to desist from the illegal use of drugs and shun drug-related crimes.
