Two Arraigned For Sale, Illegal Child Adoption
Two persons, Moses Obi, 36, and Eucharia Okeke, 35, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Umuahia Magistrates’ Court for alleged conspiracy, unlawful sale and transfer, and purchase of an 11-month-old baby.
The Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Samson Onyemucheya, told the court that the accused had conspired to commit felony.
He said that the first accused, who was father of the baby, unlawfully sold and transferred his son to the second accused, thereby violating the law.
He alleged that the second accused willingly and unlawfully purchased the eleven-month-old baby at a cost of N150,000, adding that the act was unlawful.
The first accused pleaded not guilty to the first charge of conspiracy and second charge of unlawful sale and transfer brought against him.
The second accused pleaded not guilty to the first charge of conspiracy and third charge of unlawful purchase.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Justice Agwu, appealed to the court to grant bail to the accused persons on liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Kalu, granted the bail application and adjourned the case to July 1 for hearing.
