RSG Assures On Food Preservation

The Rivers State Government has restated its commitment to the preservation and conservation of foods and natural resources to reduce wastage. The State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, stated this last Wednesday, at the “2013 World Environment Day celebration with the theme: “Think, Eat, Save” held in Port Harcourt.

The governor, who was represented by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Boms Worgu also said that, the administration was partnering with the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) to ensure reduction of wastes both in the production, processing, distribution, and consumption of foods to save the future. He tasked individuals, companies and corporate bodies to contribute the conservation of foods and natural resources by planting trees and nurture them to maturity to enhance quality of air as well as reducing flooding and erosion, especially in the rainy season in the state.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema E. Weli had called on individuals and Corporate citizens, to join the state government in the development of a green economy initiative to enhance quality of life and minimise food waste, as well conserve natural resources in a sustainable manner.

He noted that June 5, every year was recognized as World Environment Day to remind everyone that we all have roles to play in reducing  loss and waste of good.

“World Environment Day reminds us that each of us has a role to play in reducing loss and waste of food, and the same time conserve natural resources. “The State Ministry of Environment wishes to remind you that everyday is actually a World environment Day , therefore, think of role in leaving a better Environment for our children than we met”, Dr. Weli said. In goodwill messages, the Chairman, Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Environment/Sanitation, Hon. Victoria Nyeche said, the State Assembly has ratified the existing environmental law of the state, which expunged those laws that are not relevant according to the United Nation Environmental Standard.

She assured that the State Assembly would ensure that environment of the state is continued to be protected and sustained, saying that, the need to keep the environment clean was a divine mandate, which every individuals, companies and corporate societies in the state must to uphold for good healths and preservation of good environment for future generations.
