The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) has urged the Federal Government to set up a special task force to monitor the activities of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The Union in a statement issued from its national secretariat said the union was worried by the alleged non-performance of the commission.
The union alleged that the commission has abandoned several projects being executed by contractors engaged by the commission.
The statement signed by the union’s National President, Comrade Igwe Achese alleged that the commission fails  to live up to expectation especially  in term of development of the Niger Delta Region.
The union said that despite the huge resources allotted to the commission for the development of the Region,   the region was yet to enjoy significant development to tally with the huge resources.
The  statement said “the union observes the complaints of various communities in the Region of complete neglect and abandonment of Projects by the NDDC, pointing out that despite the huge funds allotted the commission from Oil revenue there is nothing really on ground to show for its existence.”
The Union said” we have had many cases of NDDC contractors collecting mobilisation fees and abandoning the projects .
The union stressed that the objective of setting the NDDC has not really been met as the roads in the Region are still in deplorable condition.
The statement further alleged that the NDDC is just another avenue for its officials and government officials to enrich themselves stressing that the commission has failed to transform lives in the Region.
Against this backdrop the union calls on the Federal Government to review the mandate of the commission to make its impact felt by the people whose soil  have been destroyed by the activities of oil multinational.
The Union said “the federal government should therefore, set up a special task force to monitor all its activities, projects and make sure that they are commissioned on time.’
“The NDDC should not be another waste pipe with abandoned projects all over the Niger Delta and it will be a failure on the federal government if the trend is allowed to continue unabated”.
