Nigeria Can Overcome Food Insecurity – NGO boss
National Coordinator, Small Holders and Youths Farmers Network of Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Mr Bright Okwu, has said that Nigeria has the capacity to overcome its food insecurity.
Okwu spoke with newsmen on Monday in Lagos.
“Our agriculture sector has the potential to fight our scourge of poverty and hunger,’’ he said.
The coordinator noted, however, that the bureaucracy in the agriculture sector was hampering its capacity to ameliorate the nation’s poverty level.
According to him, the bureaucracy needs to be looked into.
He also spoke on the need to expose farmers at the grassroots to the entrepreneurial prospects of agriculture, pointing out that this would help to overcome the challenge which poverty posed to the country.
“We need to encourage grassroots farmers to acquire skills in the processing, marketing, packaging and production of farm produce.
“Nigeria will succeed in her fight against poverty and hunger if entrepreneurship skills are inculcated in Nigerian farmers,’’ he said.
