Bayelsa Increases Students’ Bursary
The Bayelsa State Government has approved the upward review of bursary to students of Bayelsa origin studying in tertiary institutions nationwide from N15,000 to N30,000.
The Chairman of the State Scholarship Board, Mr Foster Ogola, who disclosed this on Thursday in Yenagoa said that the government had also approved N250, 000 as bursary for its students in Law Schools.
“The government has reviewed the bursary for our students upward from N15, 000 to N30,000 and the highest is N250,000 for law students. The upward review cuts across all the categories of Bayelsa State students in Nigeria and is meant to ease the financial burden on parents. It is also an incentive for prospective students of Bayelsa origin to advance their education to tertiary levels,” Ogola said.
The chairman said that 10 zones cutting across the 36 states in the country had been created for screening and data capture of students for easy administration of the bursary.
He said that the average population figure of students of Bayelsa origin in tertiary institutions across the country was put at 30,000.
Ogola disclosed that the board had contacted the various tertiary institutions in the country to furnish it with the list of Bayelsa students in their respective schools.
“Presently, there is no database of Bayelsa students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria to enable the board effect immediate e-payments. The board has therefore resolved to capture the academic and biometrics data of all Bayelsa students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This is to ensure the creation of the needed database for subsequent elimination of passing out students and inclusion of new students,” Ogola said.
