The purported gubernatorial ambition of the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu in Enugu state, last Wednesday, suffered a serious set back following the declaration by the state Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime that there was an understanding within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  that the next candidate of the party would come from Enugu North  (Nsukka Zone).

Chime made the declaration at Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, during his Town Hall Meeting with stakeholders as part of activities marking Democracy Day and the six-year anniversary of his administration.

Although Senator Ekweremadu, who comes from Enugu West is yet to officially declare for the gubernatorial race in the Coal City State, but his posters have continued to appear in different parts of the state.

Governor Chime further said that though the PDP has already had the understanding but added that who would eventually become governor would be determined by the people of the state.

He therefore assured that they would work towards the emergence of a credible candidate of the ruling party from Nsukka Zone that would subsequently become governor of Enugu state  in 2015.

Continuing, Governor Chime further re-stated that the PDP candidate would come from Nsukka zone, adding that they were working hard to ensure that whoever becomes the PDP candidate would eventually be the winner that would eventually take over from him.

On whether Nsukka zone would get Adada State or not , the governor said it was not in the power of the state government to create state, making it very clear that  they were  truly in support of creation of Adada State out of the present Enugu state.

Reacting to the falling standard of education, governor Chime stated that his government was taking positive action to check the ugly trend, regretting that the standard of education went down not only in Enugu state, but in Nigeria as a whole.

His government, he further said, had employed thousands of strong retired teachers to use their wealth of experience to raise the standard of education in the state.

Governor Chime also used the forum to call on various town union presidents in the state to always identify criminals in their communities, especially those who are in the habit of vandalizing roads and other facilities provided by government, with a view to handing them over to the police for prosecution.

The high point of the ceremony which lasted more than four hours and at the same time afforded governor Chime the opportunity to interact freely with the people was the cutting of “Democracy Day Cake” by governor Chime.

Also in attendance were traditional rulers, religious leaders, law makers, security agencies personnel, students, as well as top government officials.
