The National Union of Teftile and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTTWN) has lauded the National Industrial Court (NIC) for upturning the judgment delivered by the Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP) Tribunal against the union.

In a statement, the union Counsel Nnamouso Ekanem said the union had dragged Sino-PP Woven Bags Nigeria Limited to the Industrial Arbitration Panel over the de-unionization of its members in the employment of the company.

He said the union members working with the company were coerced to denounce their membership of the union with threats of dismissal by the company management if they fail to do so. He stressed that the union based upon the threats to its members by the company took the company to the IAP tribunal.

Mr Ekanem said at the IAP tribunal it was held by the tribunal that the union leadership did not produce any substantial evidence to show that the union members were coerced to denounce their membership of the union as alleged against the company.

The union not satisfied with the IAP tribunal judgement filed an appeal before the National Industrial Court to challenge IAP’s judgment against the union.

The Tide learnt that when the appeal came up for hearing before the NIC, the union contended that it was not given a fair hearing neither were the union witnesses evidence taken by the tribunal.

The union in its submission urged the superior court to invoke section 40 of 1999 constitution as amended and overturn the judgement of the IAPd tribunal against the union. The President of the Court Justice Babatunde Adejumo who presided over the union appeal upturned the judgement as delivered by the Industrial Arbitration Panel tribunal against the union.
