The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has been urged by a real estate consultant, William Odudu to assist workers to benefit from its proposed 600, 000 housing scheme.
Odudu, who is the Chairman of Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) Learning Centre, gave the advice recently at the NLC activities held in Lagos.
He said that with the NLC assistance, many workers who contributed to the National Housing Fund (NHF), would benefit from the scheme.
According to him, it will be a better option as it will provide many workers the opportunity to get NHF loans and buy houses.
“The NHF is not yet filtering down to the majority of workers whose two and half per cent of their salaries are being compulsorily deducted every month.
According to him, this will work better and faster than asking employers to guarantee payment of certain amounts to NLC from their salaries.
Odudu said that the intervention of NLC would facilitate the release of loans to the beneficiaries through Primary Mortgage Institutions (PMIs).
The consultant urged the NLC to go back to the drawing board and re-strategise.
Odudu said that the NLC might even have access to Estate Development Loan (EDL) of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to build the houses if it planned well.
NLC said that workers wishing to buy these houses would get their employers to guarantee that certain amount would be deducted from their salaries from source to its account. Our correspondent recalls that the NLC on May 1, said it would embark on building 600,000 houses for workers.
