The management of Federal School of Dental Technology and Therapy, Enugu, has warned newly admitted students of the institution to keep away from all forms of social vices especially cultism, examination malpractices, drug abuse and homosexualism, that are capable of ruining their life carreers if not avoided.

Rector of the school, Dr. (Mrs.) Kehinde Sofoluwe, who read the riot act to the fresh students during the 2013 and 23rd matriculation ceremony of the school in Enugu, Wednesday, made it clear that the institution frowns seriously at such nocturnal and clandestine activities, warning that if apprehended, defaulters would be expelled from the school/

Her words: “I urged you to keep away from nocturnal or clandestine activities. Say no to examination malpractices, cultism, prostitution, drug abuse, lesbianism, homosexualism, and other abominable activities, and examination malpractice is the key to outright failure”.

The Management of the institution, according to the Rector, is totally committed in ensuring that its mission which is establishing standards that will strengthen the stewardship role of the federal ministry of health in improving national health system through provision of programmes of excellence in capacity building , patient care and professional service in oral health , to the community and nation at large is fully realised.

While assuring that the school would live up to its responsibility of inculcating good moral values in the new intakes, Dr Sofoluwe, called on parents to assist the institution in that regard, because “you cannot train the mind alone and leave out the morals,” she further reasoned.

She explained that the mandate of the school is to train students who would meet the challenges “of our time and serve as positive influence in the society”, advising the matriculants to always take their studies very seriously.

The Rector, had used the event to inform the gathering that the proposed plan by the federal government to upgrade the institution to a degree awarding institution has reached advance stage, as the act has passed through the 1st and 2nd readings as well as public hearing at the National Assembly (NASS ).

According to her, as soon as the bill receives the presidential assent , it would enable the school gain access to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), which had been denied the institution since inception due to lack of an act establishing it.

Dr. Sofoluwe, further disclosed that when fully upgraded, the school would start awarding Bachelor of Technology in Dental Therapy, adding that Post Graduate Diplomas and certificates would also be awarded.

In pursuance of the above mandate, the institution, she also hinted, had taken some steps which include putting in place some structures and human resource repositioning, aimed at realising the upgrade project.

Over 200 students matriculated during the exercise which took place within the school premises.
