Port Manager Seeks Women Participation In National Dev
The Port Manager, Rivers Pot Complex, Mrs Carolyn Akum Ufere said no society can attain the goals of sustainable development and accelerated growth, create an equitable society and meet the aspirations of its people without taking into consideration the productive capacities of women.
Mrs Ufere made this assertion in a paper, titled “Career Opportunities for Women in Logistics and Transport Industry”, she presented at a forum in Lagos recently.
According to her, women are resilience and aptitude for creating a better life for all, adding that “The time for empowerment and harnessing the potentials in now”.
She noted that despite the challenges for women to work in the logistics and transport industry (maritime sector), time had also come to reach out to the women to instill our industry expertise by giving them confidence to grow and reach positions in their chosen fields in logistics and transport.
The Port Manager said that women should have equal and full participation in all spheres of the economy, pointing out that the eradication of all forms of discrimination on grounds of gender must remain priority objectives of the Federal Government.
Mrs Ufere noted that to enable women harness the enormous potential that exists in the field of international trade and transport, issues of building strong partnership of women with the establishment of Women in Logistics and Transport (WILAT), the Women’s International Trade and Shipping Association (WISTA) should be addressed as they are commendable.
She also suggested that strengthening the legal and institutional framework for affirmative action of the Federal Government directive on 35 per cent affirmative action on women appointment should be legislated as well as strengthening Maritime Training Institutions and adopting research or curricular to meet the emerging needs in the sector should also be looked into.
There is no gainsaying the important role women play n the socio-economic development of our communities. Increasingly, women are finding their place in the top echelons of the logistics and transport industry in Nigeria,” she opined.
The Port manager however salute the courage of the founder and president of the Women in Logistics and Transport in Nigeria, Hajia Aisha Ali-Ibrahim for the birth of the noble association.
