Obio/Akpor Crisis: Labour Plans Strike …Threatens To Down Tool Next Monday
The orgainsed labour in Rivers State has threatened to commence strike on Monday over the festering political crisis in Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, which has disrupted smooth working activities.
The position of the organised labour was made known by the state Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Chris Oruge and Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Chika Onuegbu while addressing a press conference at the labour house in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
Oruge said “labour was purely concerned with the rights and privileges of our members working in Obio/Akpor”.
The labour leader urged the police to allow the council workers go back to work in line with the High Court order while their salaries should be paid without delay. He said the head of local government administration in Obio/Akpor and other top officials of the council should be allowed to carry out their statutory duties pending when the political feud in the area was resolved.
In pursuance of its collective responsibility and duty to care for its members, the NLC chairman said the orgainsed labour had resolved to commence an industrial action on Monday, 27th May, 2013 following the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum issued on the matter.
Oruge also dissociated the organised labour from the on-going crisis in the state, and called for concerted efforts towards addressing security issues in the state.
Also speaking, the Rivers State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Chika Onuegbu said TUC was in total solidarity with the decisions of the Nigerian Labour Congress on the Obio/Akpor crisis, and would mobilise its members to drive home their demands.
