The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Otelemaba Dan Amachree, has dismissed speculations that legislators are planning to impeach Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
“There is no plan to impeach the governor”, the Speaker said yesterday in Port Harcourt, adding , all 27 members reportedly suspended by the Felix Obuah-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were intact.
Speaking through his Press Secretary, Mr Udede Jim Opiki, the Speaker said he heard of the rumours and read a report on the issue in a national daily and personally spoke to all the 26 lawmakers to confirm that they had not jumped ship.
“He, Speaker, personally checked on the 26 others and they all restated their loyalty to the governor of Rivers State, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi”, Opiki said.
He explained that the Speaker used the opportunity to warn against what he called assumption and reports”, that intend to impinge on the integrity of members of the state House of assembly, saying that “Mr Speaker is not aware that any of the 26 others have been compromised”.
The Speaker, he continued, therefore called on well-meaning Rivers people to pray for the speedy return of peace and normalcy to the PDP, a party they have all been working for and building since the inception of this democratic dispensation in 1999.”
This week has been rife with rumours of different number of the lawmakers out of the 27 suspended, including the Speaker, having been bought over through political and financial carrots.
But the Speaker’s statement has finally put paid to the speculations which were already gathering steam in the state, as he reassured Rivers people that their government had not been hijacked by Abuja-based politicians for their selfish interest.
