Secretary, Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association (NBSA), Kehinde Laniyan,  has called on corporate organisations to sponsor the baseball national team to participate in competitions locally and internationally.

Laniyan told newsmen in Abuja that the association wanted to popularise the sport among Nigerians.

He said the baseball national team was known internationally, based on their brilliant performances in tournaments and being the second best in Africa, investment in it was worthwhile.

“We want Nigerians to know that we play baseball, we want their support, corporate support, we want government support at the national and state levels in the game’s development,’’ Laniyan said.

He said that baseball was a good game to earn a living from, noting that building a career in baseball was more profitable than football.

According to him, professionals in baseball are well paid than those in football and that Nigeria should not only concentrate on football.

“We believe that Nigerians can also make a living from baseball; it is one of the highest paying sports in the world.

“At times, when you look at baseball professionals, the money that they have, football money could be peanuts, so this is where we want to throw opportunities to Nigerians because it is a world game,’’ he said.

Laniyan said that if the association got sponsors, it would run a baseball league as it was done in other baseball nations which would in turn create employment for Nigerian youths.
