Mararaba Residents Demand Refuse Receptacle

Some residents of Mararaba in Nasarawa State have appealed to the state government to provide refuse receptacles in the area.

Our correspondent reports that heaps of waste along the Abuja/Keffi Federal Highway constitutes an eyesore  and a threat to the health of the people.

The residents told our correspondent that the situation was caused by the lack of refuse bins to dump waste generated from homes and market places.

Mrs Habiba Ibrahim, a resident, told our correspondent  that if refuse receptacles were provided the issue of indiscriminate waste dumping would have been controlled.

“People are compelled to dump waste on the road because there is nothing they can do since everywhere is filled up with houses.”

In his contribution, Mr Aba Aba, a resident, said that management of waste was a major challenge in the area.

Aba said that Nasarawa as the nearest state to Abuja, should also be kept clean as the FCT.

“It seems that waste management is seen by the government as a burden rather too heavy to be handled.

“These are ways of inviting diseases like cholera, measles and other diseases associated with unclean environment.

“The outbreak of any disease, be it in urban cities or rural areas today is characterised by the lifestyle of people living in such area.

“We, Nigerians are not conscious of our environment and as such, our health is easily affected.

In her contribution, Miss Inikpi Iyeema, called for the placement of refuse bins along the road to poor waste disposal and poor sanitation attitude exhibited by many Nigerians.

Such a measure, the residents said would make it easier for the people and the government to control indiscriminate waste dumping.
